Victoria Wyeth

For all of you art lovers out there, the Manayunk Art Center is having Victoria Wyeth, grandaughter of Andrew and niece of Jamie, on Sunday, April 19th at 1:00. The gallery is located at 419 Green Lane (rear). Come out and hear a wonderful lecture on the Wyeth family. Victoria will tell us all about their art, plus share photos and family history. Everyone is welcome. Come out and enjoy a great afternoon with Victoria. Light refreshments will be served.

Just a little bit of news this weekend. . .

I submitted two oil paintings to the Greater Norristown Art League's Non-Pro Show. They were the "Winter Solstice" and "Cliff". The "Winter Solstice" won first prize and "Cliff" an Honorable Mention. Both paintings were well received, and it was very exciting and a great honor!

The quality of work at the show was outstanding. GNAL shows are always quite interesting. There is a Photography Exhibit coming up, March 16 -18, which I am sure will be excellent! Come out and support your local art community.

It's hard to believe that the holidays have come and gone. We were all prepared for the hum drum days of January. Instead, we have been given bright sunny spring-like days, not that I'm complaining; but I do have daffadils coming up, and the flowering cherry trees in my yard are in full bloom. Oh well, I'm sure we'll get snow eventually, won't we?!

Since I have been dreaming of snow, I have painted a winter snow scene, just to get me in the mood for winter, mind you. It's been snowing non stop in my studio. I must tell you, I got these fine mesh spatter screens from Cheap Joe's Art Stuff, and they make beautiful snow (just like the ski resorts!!!) He markets them for watercolor, but I use them for oils too.
So now you can give up the toothbrush and messy fingers approach and make your own snow or maybe just play some golf until winter finally arrives.

2006 Annual Fall Exhibition - 65th Anniversary - Greater Norristown Art League

September 15-17 GNAL had their 65th Anniversary Exhibit. There were 200 entries; watercolors, oils, acrylics, pastels, graphic design, collage, sculpture and photography. If you saw the show, you know it was awesome. If you didn't, try not to miss the Annual Theme Show November 2-5. You won't be disspointed. All work will be done in White & White, White, White & Black, Black & Black. This will be a challenge, and I am sure very enjoyable.

The big news for me was that in the Painting Non-Professional category, my oil painting, "A Summer Pool" won First Prize. Needless to say, it was very exciting - and humbling - because the company I was in was fantastic!

The Juror was Don Patterson, a nationally recognized watercolorist and a Bucks County resident. Don is a signature member of the AWS, NWS, PWS, and an Honorary Life Member of the Philadelphia Water Color Society. Don's articles have appeared in many publications, including, "Watercolor Magic" and "the Artist" magazines and most recently in issues of "The Artists Magazine." He has written a book titled "Creating Watercolor Landscapes Using Photographs" published by North Light.

Many thanks to Don for awarding "The Summer Pool" First Prize.

Woodmere Members' Exhibit

The Woodmere Art Museum is hosting the 66th Annual Members' Exhibit. This is a wonderful opportunity to see fantastic original art work. There are Oils, Watercolors, Pastels, Acryllics, Drawings, Photographs, Pottery, Jewelry and Sculpture, most of which are for sale.

The exhibition runs July 16 through August 27, 2006, and is open to the public. Museum hours are: Tuesday through Friday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM, Sunday l:00 PM-5:00 PM.

Woodmere Art Museum is a little treasure in our area. (9201 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA) Stop by for a pleasant surprise -- you will not be disappointed!

Also, my painting, "The Pink House", is in the exhibit.

Wyeth Exhibition

Has everyone been to the Andrew Wyeth exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art? If not, this treasure is a "must see". The work spans his long career and is truly mesmerizing.

The paintings draw you in. You notice the finest of details. Nothing is as it seems. They are almost dreamlike in their realism. Every object in the painting seems to have a different meaning. Whether it is the hill in the background that represents his father, N. C. Wyeth, or seeing a small self-portrait of Andrew in the doorknob of "Her Room", it takes you, the viewer, deep into the painting. The symbolism is astounding. The light is beautiful. When you look at "Groundhog Day" and all of the studies prior to the finished work, his attention to the smallest detail and his steady patience is truly amazing.

His portraits are breathtaking. In only one, "Nogeesshik" does the subject look directly at the artist. That in itself must have been very difficult to do because it seems as though he is painting their very soul. But then again, that it what I felt about each object he painted, whether it was a tree, a boat, a door, a house, a coat without the wearer, I felt I was looking at the soul of the thing.

Go, and enjoy the exhibition. Wyeth is definitely a genuine American treasure.

Deja Vu

Last week I put my Early Works Gallery in my website. I was having a nostalgic time going through work I had done when I was a teenager. I came across the first portrait I ever did. It was of Paul McCartney. I just loved the Beatles then. (still do).

My daughter, Chloe, who is an art major at her high school came to me and said, "I am so excited. We are doing portraits at school." I asked her who she was going to do, and she said, "It has to be someone famous." I said, "Well who?!!" (I figured she was going to say one of her favorite JPOP/JROCK stars or someone I had never heard of.)

She said, "John Lennon." That's pretty funny, 40 years later, my daughter is doing one of the Beatles for her first portrait, and she had not even been on my Early Works site! What's that saying - the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

By the way, her portrait of John was quite good, just as handsome as I remember.

a note on brushes

A couple of weeks ago, I purchased a very unique brush. It is a Robert Simmons 15/0. It has 8 or 10 inch long bristles. This brush is perfect for dragging those small clouds across the horizon and making ripples in the water, but the best thing it does for me is make those fine strands of hair on my portraits. I found it performs just as well in oils as it does in watercolor. Nice for adding that little wisp of detail.
